Happy Birthday David Weisner!
David Wiesner was born on this day, February 5th in 1956. David is an author and illustrator known for his picture books with fantastical artwork and often times very few words.
Born and raised in New Jersey, David was a child with a big imagination. He loved books from an early age and would often read the World Book Encyclopedia, creating images in his mind from the things he found there. His artistic talent was with him from a young age.
He became interested in art and the history of it at an early age. He studied art in college at the Rhode Island School of Design. Always interested in the story that came before and after an image, he soon discovered wordless storytelling. His images are often very imaginative, such as frogs flying on lily pads, in Tuesday. He sometimes creates three dimensional objects that only exist in his imagination so he can draw them in detail.
David usually spends several years working on one book. He has illustrated more than twenty picture books for children, which have won numerous awards. His books Tuesday, The Three Pigs and Flotsom are all Caldecott Medal winners making Mr. Wiesner one of only two people to have won the award three times.
