Story Time Starter — Bugs!

August 16, 2014

This month's Story Time Starter comes from Miss Mary at Main Library:

Wherever we go in the summer there are sure to be plenty of bugs and spiders. Some bugs crawl, other bugs fly and some bugs even light up in the dark. Buggy tales make such fun story times and will sure to delight children of all ages.   Be sure to include a few non-fiction books on bugs when reading to children as well as the great picture books that are available.

Here are just a few awesome books about bugs and spiders:

Music, nursery rhymes and fingerplays are fun additions to any story time:

Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away.
               Mother Goose

My Friendly Caterpillar
My friendly caterpillar (fingers craw up arm)
Made its cocoon one day. (close hands together)
It turned into a butterfly (open hands with thumbs hooked together)
And quickly flew away. (flap hands)

Eensy Weency Spider (or Itsy Bitsy Spider)
An eensy weency spider
Climbed up the water spout. (use fingers to climb up spout)
Down came the rain and washed the spider out. (make rain come down)
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain. (make a sun)
And the eency weency spider climbed up the spout again. (climb up spout again)

Bugs Are Crawling
Bugs are crawling on the ground.
Onto my shoe without a sound.
Up my shin and to my knee.
Creepy bugs all over me!
Tickle, tickle. Oooh that itches.
Oh no! Bugs are in my britches.

Watch Out For the Bugs (do actions)
Clap your hands, stomp your feet,
Wiggle all around.
Reach your arms high in the air,
Then bend them to the ground.
Nod your head, shake your hips,
Give yourself some hugs.
Sit down flat upon the floor,
But watch out for the bugs.
