The County Fair
One of the best times of the summer for many of us is County Fair time. The sound of music as we stroll down the midway. Spinning high in the sky on a Ferris Wheel. Being tempted to step right up and win a prize by tossing a ring around a bottle. Smelling delicious french fries, corn dogs and cotton candy. These sights and sounds bring back many memories for adults and provide new ones for children.
County fairs date back to 1846 when the Ohio Department of Agriculture set aside this celebration of the farm family. A showcase of the bounty that was produced from the farm, as well as tribute to the economical impact of farming, attention was given to farm animals, gardening and crops, as well as homemaking skills such as quilting and canning. Entertainment for the families that came to the fair developed later including rides, games, food, shows and a variety of competitions.
Ohio has over 90 county fairs throughout the season beginning in early June and lasting through mid-October. The Richland County Fair is currently taking place, August 3rd through August 9th. A visit to a county fair is a great family adventure. Hear the soft moo of a cow close up. Watch a harness race. A tractor pull. Or maybe a pig race! Win a pet goldfish. Or enjoy some sticky sweet cotton candy.
