Story Time Starter 'G' is for Giraffe

June 11, 2014

We do animal-themed story times all the time, but we can't say we've ever done a story time specifically on giraffes before!  We had our first summer preschool story time on Monday at the main library, and we shared books, rhymes, songs, and a craft about those graceful long-necked creatures.  And we are so happy to share with you!

There are tons of great non-fiction books about giraffes, but not as many as you'd think for the picture books.  Fortunately, we've got a pretty good collection, so we were able to gather enough stories to use.  Several of the books talk about giraffes that dance (apparently a popular topic; who knew?!).

Take a look at the books we pulled together:

Giraffe Booklist (Word Document/.doc file)

Here are a few rhymes to add to the stories:

I'm a Giraffe

I'm a big tall giraffe stretching way up high
(reach arms up)
A big tall giraffe, I almost reach the sky
(stand on tiptoes)
I eat the leaves from the tallest trees
(pretend to eat)
And when I run, I move with ease
(pretend to run)
I'm a big tall giraffe stretching way up high
(reach arms up)
Way ... up ... high!
(reach on tiptoes)

Five Giraffes in the Bathtub

One giraffe in the bathtub going for a swim
Knock, knock (clap twice)
Splash, splash (slap knees twice)
Come on in! (motion with both hands to come in)

Two giraffes in the bathtub going for a swim
Knock, knock
Splash, splash
Come on in!

Continue with 3 & 4 giraffes

Five giraffes in the bathtub going for a swim
Knock, knock
Splash, Splash
They all fell in!

Here are a couple of songs we used (there aren't that many to choose from, so you'll have to fill in with some other favorite story time songs):

Animal Walks CD by Georgianna Stewart
Song: Giraffe Skip (#10)

Wee Sing Animals, Animals, Animals CD
Song: The Giraffe (#66)

We finished by making a clothespin giraffe, but here are some other craft options to choose from:
