Happy Pi Day!

March 14, 2014

Today is Pi Day, or Pie Day -- a day to celebrate the numerical value of a mathematical term, or a great day to celebrate and eat pie!  And since today is 3-14, we can do both.  Pi is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter; or in other words, the number 3.14159.  Here's a much better explanation for all you visual learners.

Here at the library, we've got books on math, cookbooks for making awesomely good food, and a book that combines the two:

Recipes include Probability Trail Mix, Triangular Number Cake, and Variable Pizza Pi.  Sounds delicious!  And educational!

Here are some other fun activities you can do to celebrate Pi Day (or Pie Day) with your family:

  • Print off some Pi-related worksheets from Enchanted Learning

  • Make a traditional pie, like apple, peach, cherry, or blueberry, using a time-tested family recipe

  • Sing Happy Birthday to Albert Einstein, who was born this day in 1879
