The Volunteer Services Department
Mission
The mission of the Volunteer Services Department of the Mansfield/Richland
County Public Library is to assist the library staff in its efforts to
serve the Main Library and its branches in the delivery of comprehensive
service to its patrons and the community. The Volunteer Services Department
offers members of the community the opportunity to give service, share
talents, acquire skills and to gain satisfaction in a job well done.
Volunteers do not replace the paid staff, but aid the staff in the various
departments, thereby enhancing the services the library provides.
Goals and Objectives
A. Recruitment
- To recruit qualified volunteers who represent all areas of the community.
- To recruit volunteers who can meet the needs of the Mansfield/Richland
County Public Library.
B. Orientation and Training
- To properly orient the volunteer to the library and its staff.
- To provide adequate training to assure that the volunteer will be
useful and comfortable in his/her placement.
C. Community Awareness
- To be sensitive to the needs of the community through volunteers.
- To promote the needs and accomplishments of the library volunteer
program.
- To let the community, through the involvement of volunteers, be aware
of the resources of the Library.

The Role of the Volunteer
Today's volunteers are selective about what they do. Many are looking
for opportunities for personal growth and expression, while others simply
want to give a little of themselves to a worthy institution. Whatever
your personal reasons for joining us, be assured that we applaud your
choice.
The volunteer program will be constantly changing as volunteers and
staff ask questions and make suggestions. Volunteer services are likely
to expand, making new library projects and programs possible.
The time that you give as a volunteer is valued by all the library staff.
We realize that you're in this job to do something - not just for something
to do!
Volunteer Services Coordinator
The Volunteer Services Coordinator provides direction, coordination
and consultation for all volunteer service in the library. The coordinator
directs the development of written job descriptions then recruits, interviews,
selects and places the volunteers. The Volunteer Services Coordinator
also develops programs of appropriate recognition, retention and motivation
of volunteer service, The coordinator serves as a consultant to administration
and department supervisors in areas relating to volunteerism. Proper personnel records and service reports will also be maintained by the coordinator.
