The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest
December, January, and February

Grades 6-12 – Are you a trivia nut?  Do you think you know everything about your favorite books?  Do you love free prizes?  Then join The Great Scavenger Hunt Contest by choosing a book from the ones listed and completing the trivia challenge for a chance to win a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card.  Visit your local library to get all the details on how you can change from a reader into a hunter today.

Can You Name That Tune?
Entire Month of December
Grades 6-12 – Each phrase in the contest is a clue to a popular holiday song.  See if you can decode the descriptions and match them to the correct songs.  Turn in a completed entry form any time during the month, and you’ll have a chance to win gift certificates to Cinemark. 

Game Night @ the Library

Grades 6-12 – We’re gaming at Lucas Branch!  Join us and show off your skills or maybe try your hand at a new game.  Be prepared for something different every time.

Holiday Ornaments Workshop

Grades 6-12 – Bring your holiday spirit and your creativity to this workshop and take home some festive ornaments.  All instructions and supplies will be provided for you to create decorations that will brighten up even a “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree.  Sign up is required.

Grades 6-12 - Come to this program and recycle an ordinary glass jar into a glittery winter wonderland.  Make one for a gift, or keep it for when you feel like “shaking things up” a little.   All supplies will be provided. 

Origami Wreath Ornaments

Grades 6-12 – Join us and learn how to fold a beautiful wreath ornament to express your holiday spirit.  All instructions and supplies will be provided.

Take Your Best Shot! Photo Contest
Who: Anyone in Grades 6-12
What: Photos
When: Mon. Jan. 4 – Fri. Jan. 22
Where: Photos may be dropped off at any M/RCPL location
Categories:

            Places
            Pets
Rules: Photos may not be larger than 8”x10.”
Only one photo may be entered in each category.
Do not mat photos.
Prizes: 1st and 2nd place will be awarded in the three different categories.  1st place prize is $25.00; 2nd place is $15.00.  Winners will be chosen by Friday, Jan. 29, and prizes will be mailed the following week.  Entries will be on display through Wednesday, February 3, and may be picked up at the Reference Desk or Branch Library beginning on Monday, February 8.

Exploding Box

Grades 6-12 - Get in on the one-of-a-kind, designed-by-you, Exploding Box.  Pictures poems, quotes and/or family histories … all can spill forth from your Exploding Box.  This keepsake for you, a special friend, or family member is a personalized gift for all occasions.  One you can create over and over again!  Instructions and supplies will be provided.  Sign up is required.

Grades 6-12 – It’s that time again!  We’re closing the library to everyone but teens for a fun after-hours party.  Come for games, surprises and, back by popular demand, the Guitar Hero Tournament.

ACT/SAT Strategy Session
Tue. Feb. 16  Ontario Branch         6 PM
Cheryl Welch, Ph.D. from the Sylvan Learning Center will present an overview of how to raise ACT/SAT test scores.  You'll find out whether it is wise to leave questions blank, how to best guess, how to ace hard reading problems even when you are stuck in a difficult passage, and how to turn a tricky algebra problem into simple arithmetic.  Find out what the differences are in the ACT and SAT and how to decide which one you should take.  Parents are encouraged to attend with their student.

Teen Book Lovers

Grades 6-12 – Let’s talk about the book, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.  How would you feel about being forced to have surgery to become PRETTY?  Would you want to escape to the Smoke like Tally did?  Read the book before the movie.  Stop by and join in the conversation.
