Don't Bug Me, I'm Reading!

Programs and Guidelines

Monday, June 2 – Saturday, July 26
Anyone going into Grades 6-12

Register anytime between June 2 and July 26 at any library location.  Read any book you want to, and then fill out an entry slip to win great prizes like gift certificates to Best Buy, Target, and Barnes and Noble.  Don’t miss all the great programs just for teens!

Grades 6-12 - Join with other teens to talk about the best and worst books you are reading this summer.  Come prepared to share your opinions about books, movies, and more.  Feel free to bring your lunch; desserts will be provided.  Sign up is required.

Grades 6-12 - Come to this high flying program and test your skills at turning brightly colored sticky notes into aerodynamic jets.  Follow our simple instructions to engineer your own tiny flying machines.  Will your creations break the sound barrier or drop like a rock?  No pilot’s license required.  Instructions and supplies will be provided.  Klutz-friendly assistance will be available.

Library Building Contest

Who:    Anyone going into Grades K-9
What:    Build a library
When:   Monday, July 28 – Friday, August 15, 2008
Where:   Drop libraries off at the Main Library
Rules:   Libraries must be no larger than approximately 2’ by 2’ by 2’
Libraries must not weigh more than 25 pounds
Libraries must be on a sturdy base
Libraries must be created by the participants
Judging will be done by local history experts.
Prizes:   1st and 2nd places will be awarded in 3 different age categories (K-2, 3-5, and 6-9)
1st prize is $25.00 and 2nd prize is $15.00
Winners will be notified by Friday, August 22, 2008.  Prizes will be mailed to winners the following week.
Entries will be displayed through Friday, September 12, and may be picked up any time between Friday, September 12 and Friday, September 19, 2008.  If not picked up by this date, they will be discarded.

Grades 6-12 - Tired of being you?  Then come and be transformed by special effects makeup artist, Daric Singingwind.  Volunteers will be selected from the audience and changed into something else entirely.  With Daric Singingwind’s step-by-step instructions you too can change your identity.  Sign up is required.

Super-Duper Water Shooter

Grades 6-12 - Sizzling summer temperatures make this the perfect program for you!  Using basic materials available at local do-it-yourself stores, you will make your own “super-duper water shooter.”  After customizing the shooter, test out your aim with a little water and some target practice.  Instructions and supplies will be provided.  Klutz-friendly assistance will be available.  Sign up is required.

Beach Party 
Fri. July 25    Main Library  5-7:30 PM
Enjoy the best of the beach—rain or shine.  Try your hand at beach volleyball, sand art, lei making, coconut bowling, ring the flamingos, and of course, the hula hoop contest.  Snacks will be provided for all participants.  Sign up is required.

Featuring a Gullibility Quiz, a Recycled Taj Mahal, an Amazing Maze, a Crazy Car Match-up, Pictographs Identification, a Buggy Word Search, a First Lines Contest, and Offensive/Defensive Bugs

Grades 6-12 - Can’t make it to any of the planned programs, but you still want a chance to participate in something more during the Teen Summer Library Program?  Then these quizzes and games are just for you.  Come in anytime during the Summer Library Program and ask for the current teen quiz.  Turn in a completed form, and possibly win a prize.

Teen Upcoming Titles for 2008

Tons of great new teen titles are coming out this year, like Christopher Paolini’s final book in the Inheritance Trilogy, Brisingr, and Stephenie Meyer’s final book in the Twilight Series, Breaking Dawn.  Check the list below to see if any of your favorite authors or series have anything new out this year.  Call or stop by your local library to place these items on hold so you can be among the first to read these awesome new books!
