Books like
these are often disliked by adults because they jump to the assumption
that they are morbid. Although they seem to be about illness and
dying, her books focus more on dealing with death. Her novels
always end with hope. McDaniel's hope comes from her being a Christian.
In a few of her books, McDaniel speaks from experience. Her oldest son, Sean
was diagnosed with diabetes at age three. He came terrifyingly
close to death. If Sean had not been ill, she would not have written
her first novel. She says, however, that show would gladly give
up writing if it meant Sean wouldn't have diabetes. Also, her
father-in-law had multiple sclerosis, and her mother-in-law died
of cancer while still pretty young. McDaniel herself was diagnosed
with breast cancer. Thankfully, cancer was caught early enogh
that the doctors were able to remove the cancerous lump. McDaniel
believes this helps her to write about cancer.
It is quite easy to see why McDaniel is such a well-liked writer. she knows
from experience what to write about, and she writes about an issue
that is rarely discussed with teens.
