Being Dead
by Vivian Vande Velde

Being Dead has seven short stories in it. It's a horror book with a lot of suspense, but in a couple stories, there is a bit of comedy. It's hard to pick just one story to talk about, because they're all so good, and I don't want to ruin it for those teens that might want to read this title. I would rate this book at 9.5, because I wish that there were more stories that the author would have written.

Riddles
Q. There is a father and his son that went out driving, and they got in a car crash. The father was killed instantly. The son was rushed to the hospital right away. He was taken to an old surgeon. The old surgeon said, " I can't operate on this boy; he is my son." Can you figure this dilemma out?

A. The old surgeon was the boy's mother!
Q. A man rides into town on Friday, stays for three nights, and leaves on Friday. How is this possible?
A. Friday is a horse!
Q. If there is a boat full of copycats and one jumps out, how many are left?
A. None. They all jumped out.
Jokes
Q. What animals are well educated?
A. Fish, because they go around in schools.
Q. What do you call a banana that gets run over by an eighteen-wheeler?
A. Banana splat.
Q. What did the doctor say to the patient after surgery?
A. That's enough out of you.
Q. Why do cows live in barns?
A. They're too big for birdhouses.
Q. Why is it dangerous to play cards in the jungle?
A. Because it's full of cheetahs.

It happened again today, and it's so disappointing. Reading book jackets can be a little like reading "For Sale" ads for cars. The ad copy makes it sound like the perfect vehicle, or it sounds like it will be a great read from the book jacket description. But when I go to check the car out, or crack open the book and read through the first few pages--"Hey, what happened?" I flip the book over and check the title. This isn't the story line the author sold me on. Come on now--deliver! To make it easy to "test-drive" books sign up for our Dear Reader OnLine Book Club.
