What are Graphic Novels?

"The Graphic Novel resembles the comic book in form and format. One might say it is a literary comic book, or a hybrid between a text-based novel and a comic book. Entire novels, some of serious literary merit, are now appearing in this genre, which once was reserved for a quick read. A graphic novel is a series of panels containing words and pictures, with gaps between panels." - Eliza T. Dresang. Radical Change: Books for Youth in a Digital Age. New York: H. W. Wilson (1999), pages 96-97.

"Basically, a graphic novel is a sturdy, lengthy comic book that contains a single story or a set of interralated stories told by using ... sequential are." D. Aviva Rothschild
