Bio: Brie

Hey out there.  I have a fetish for UFO’s, Bigfoot, urban legends and Renaissance Festivals.  Check out my column, straight from the horse’s mouth to learn the wacky truth behind common misconceptions.  See you on the flip side!

True or False:

The Reagan administration proposed reclassifying ketchup as a vegetable in order to cut costs for the school lunch program.

True:  In 1981 Congress cut $1 billion from child-nutrition funding and gave the USDA 90 days to develop new standards for school lunches that would cut costs but not nutritional value.

The combined weight of all the ants in the world is equal to that of the combined weight of all humans.

True:  According to entomologist E. O. Wilson, there are about 10,000,000,000,000 ants on the earth, and their weight is equivalent to the entire human population.  That’s roughly 1.6 million ants per person.

Spider silk is as strong as the Kevlar in bullet proof vests.

True: It’s stronger than steel and can stretch up to 5% of its original length.  If a strand of spider silk was the width of a pencil, it would stop a Boeing 747 airplane in flight.
