Reader Collection
Sometimes it can be difficult to choose the right books for a new reader. The Mansfield/Richland County Public Library is in the process of creating four sections in the Reader Collection to make it easier to find a book for beginning readers.
Pre-emergent- These books have white labels on the spine. They contain few words, large print and large pictures
Emergent- These books have an orange label on the spine. They have more text than the pre-emergent books, but still have large print, plenty of white space and repetition of vocabulary.
Early Fluent- These books have a green label on the spine. They have smaller print, fewer pictures and more advanced vocabulary and storylines.
Fluent- These books have a blue label on the spine. They have more complex ideas and advanced vocabulary.
Each of these sections has a variety of books to challenge new readers and help develop reading skills.
Ready, Set, Read!
The Ready, Set, Read! project came from and idea presented at a workshop by Penny Neef from the West Bloomfield Township Public Library in Michigan. She shared how their collection of easy readers is organized into four general levels to make it easier for parents to find the appropriate books for their beginning readers. They also created packets for first graders and their parents.
Packets including a parent guide, a poster and stickers for children will be sent home with first graders throughout the county late in February. The materials in this packet will guide parents in choosing the right books for their children and suggest activities they can do at home to help them become better readers. The poster is a fun way for beginning readers to track progress through the four levels of the Reader Collection. This project is funded through a generous donation from the Friends of the Library.
DVDs
Beginning February 4, older DVDs will have a 7 day loan period, and be able to be reserved and renewed.
DVDs that will continue to be a 3 day loan and non-renewable and unable to be reserved are:
1) New theatrical feature films
2) Selected television movies (like "High School Musical 2")
3) The most recent season release of current TV series. (For example, "Heroes" and "Lost" are current TV series. "Heroes" is broadcasting season 2, so season 1 on DVD will be "new"; and "Lost" is broadcasting season 4, so the DVDs of season 3 will be considered "new".)
Some new "popular" non-fiction may also be given a 3 day loan period.
