Books and Brunch
All local school librarians and teachers are invited to Books and Brunch on October 2, 2009. The program will begin at 8:30 with brunch and browsing. We will discuss new books available at the Library. Our featured speaker will be Stephanie Tolan, author of Newbery Honor Book Surviving the Applewhites and many other books for children and teens. The morning will end at 12:00 with a chance to shop at the Evergreen Book Store. This is a great time to network with other educators, and learn about materials the Library has available to help you in your lessons. If you would like to attend, call 419-521-3110 by September 24 to make your reservation.
Summer Library Program
This year our Summer Library Program was a success with 5352 children joining the SLP and 52% of those completing the program by reading 8 ¾ hours and visiting the Library 5 times. Lucas Elementary won the SLP Participation Contest with a record-breaking 84% of the student population joining the Summer Library Program. Congratulations!
The Teen SLP had 1652 participants with 52% completing the program by reading 1000 pages and the Adult SLP had 2192 participants. That means a total of 9196 people participated in the Summer Library Program at the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library!
Thank you to all who encouraged students to read over the summer.

Met Any Good Authors Lately?
Kate Messner explains how to use Skype to bring authors into the classroom in School Library Journal (August 2009). Skype, a videoconferencing program, makes it possible to have a real-time chat with an author. A list of authors who participate for free is provided. www.slj.com/skypeauthors
