Wind Whirlies

This craft is easy to do and fun to watch blow in the breeze.  All you need is ¼” drinking straws, a paper hole punch (1/4” diameter), scissors and string.

craft

To build a Wind Whirlie, start with one full-length straw for the axle.  Punch a hole through both ends.  Cut about 12 straws in various sizes and punch a hole through the center of each one.  Start with one unpunched straw and put it through the bottom hole on the axle.  Now, assemble the Wind Whirlie by placing all the punched straws on the axle, pushing them close together until the axle is filled.  Tie a string in the top hole to hang.  Arrange the straws in a spiral shape so the wind currents catch it and make it spin!
