Publishers Weekly
Cat lovers will recognize the familiar scenario depicted in Geras's (Troy, reviewed below) brief text: a kitten that has trouble finding the right place for a nap. Walters (When Will It Be Spring?) portrays the saucer-eyed, pint-sized feline at the peak of spring, as the kitten starts his search among forsythia, daffodils and lush green grass. But, like Goldilocks, he finds each potential napping place either too uncomfortable, ill-fitting or, in the case of a promising spot behind the bathroom door, fraught with hazard. Ginger Kitten eventually scouts out a spot that's just right: a "child's warm lap. Finally he's found the perfect place for a nap!" The palette of orange and lapis imbues the pages with a jewel-like elegance. Feline fans will cotton to this volume, which nails the audacity and awkwardness at the heart of a kitten's irresistible appeal. Ages 2-6. (May) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Little ginger cat likes to run and jump and play but mostly he likes to sleep. As he wanders in and out of the house each potential napping place presents a problem. The wooden chair is too hard, a box too small, the mat too prickly, and when he snuggles down on the bed, Mommy says, "Shoo!" Into the den he steps on kitten feet to cozy up on the sofa on a little boy's lap. The perfect spot at last. The simple, rhyming text is extended by expressive paintings with bright, lively colors. Ginger cat is adorable and is given an endearing personality by Walters' illustrations. At bedtime or naptime this will be the perfect read. 2001, Dutton, $15.99. Ages 3 to 7. PreS-Gr 1-"Ginger Kitten/likes to run/and jump/and crawl/and leap. But most of all,/he likes to sleep." This story follows the adorable fellow as he undertakes a quest to find a perfect spot to take a nap. The feline wanders from inside and out, from one unsatisfactory place to another, until he finds the snuggest locale in the house and nestles on the couch with a young boy in front of the fire. The warmth of that scene just glows. The illustrations are executed with a kind of simplified realism. The scenes are bright, bold, and somewhat enlarged, reflecting the creature's diminutive perspective and na vet . Children will relate to the kitten's search for comfort and a sense of belonging.-Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
