March Craft
Woven Wall Hanging

This month’s craft is a textured weaving on cardboard loom.  Complete directions are in Making Amazing Art! by Sandi Henry j745.5 H254 pgs.50-52.  Other good books are Angela Weaves a Dream by Michele Sola j746.1 S684, Weaving the Rainbow by George Ella Lyon JE Lyo, and You Can Weave!  By Kathleen Monaghan j746.41 M734.

Start by cutting short slits in a 6”X9” piece of cardboard ¼“ apart on the short ends.  Tape the end of a string to the back side of the loom.  ‘Warp’ the loom by wrapping the string around and around the loom, through slits at the top and bottom.  Tape the other end on the back side.

Cut a piece of yarn 2’ long.  Tie one end onto the first warp string and thread the other end through a darning needle and begin weaving over and under the warp strings to create ‘weft’.  Continue weaving back and forth until the yarn gets too short.  Tie another color or texture on to the first yarn and continue until done.  To add texture and variety, thread buttons, shells, or beads onto the yarn as you weave.  When finished, cut the warp strings in the middle on the back side of the loom.  Tie the first warp string to the next one until all the strings are knotted on top and bottom.  Tie warp strings around a dowel at the top to hang.
