SLJ Reviews 1992 May (SLE2)

Gr 1-2 -- Yolen takes readers to 17 different countries, sharing 32 rhymes, chants, and songs, each in its native language along with an English translation. Specific activity directions for the games are not given. While a few of the selections retain their rhyme, flow, and rhythm in translation, many suffer in the attempt, making them difficult to use with children.

The interest here lies in the universality of the joy and language of children's play as well as with the illustrations. Artists from each of the cultures represented have interpreted the rhymes in varied media to create panoramas of multicultural images. This collection will be of interest to libraries searching for titles that represent varied cultures while also emphasizing the bonds that tie them together. --Janie Schomberg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, IL Grades 3-6 FICTION Copyright 1992 Cahners Business Information.
