How to Stay Cool This Summer Without
Air Conditioning

There are many ways to keep cool on a sweltering summer’s day if you live in a house without air conditioning.  Try a few of these tips!!

  1. Drink plenty of water!!  Sugary drinks and those laden with caffeine can cause dehydration.  Keep kids hydrated with cool water.

  2. Wet your wrists with cold water.  Wrap ice cubes in a wash cloth and place them on the inside of the wrists.  Constantly cooling off the wrists can reduce core body temperature by up to 3 degrees.  Relief is almost immediate and lasts up to an hour!

  3. Turn off computers, television, lights and anything that is a source of heat.  Wash and rinse clothes in cold water settings and do not use heat to dry dishes in the dishwasher.  Run all appliances during the cool hours of the day.

  4. Stay downstairs!  Spend the day on the first floor of the house or in the basement.  Heat rises, so it is much cooler in the lower parts of the house.  Keep upstairs windows cracked with a fan than points outside to draw the hot air out of the house.

  5. Take off your shoes inside the house.  Much of your body heat is released through the soles of the feet, the palms of your hands, and the scalp.

  6. Use a water mister to keep your skin, hair, and clothing damp.  Then sit in front of a fan.  As the water evaporates, it will cool the body.

If all else fails, come to the library during the hottest hours of the day!  You can spend the afternoon reading a good book, using our computers, playing games, or enjoying our great children’s programming.  And the best part is—it is air conditioned and FREE!!
