Christmas Is...
by Gail Gibbons
(Check Catalog)

Celebrates the many things Christmas can be.

Children's Literature
Beginning with a history of Christmas and then presenting a wide range of the holiday symbols, from angels to Christmas lights, and decorations to cards, Gibbons information is clear, concise and informative. She compares and contrasts St. Nicholas and Santa Claus, and later says, "Christmas is a time of giving gifts to show love for others." Family gatherings, carols and prayer are also important parts of this holiday. Dedicating the book to peace on earth, she concludes, "Christmas is...peace, love, and joy." Well-organized and inviting, the one or two sentences of explanation are perfectly chosen to satisfy primary grade children.

The joy-filled watercolor illustrations capture the excitement of the season. There is a multi-page sequence of a family selecting and decorating their tree and welcoming the grandparents for Christmas dinner. It adds warmth and a bit of a storyline while presenting the symbols and their meanings. Curl up on the sofa with your favorite child and share this gem¾a gift from the author. 2001, Holiday House, $16.95. Ages 3 to 8. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
