If you are planning a vacation for your family this year,
you might try to combine family time with exploring living history as
dramatized in these living history museums. Living history sites from
around the United States are included here but a special emphasis is
placed on Ohio's many historic sites.

The Ohio Historical Society

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation,
P.O. Box 1607,
Williamsburg, Virginia 23187-1607
In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed
in Massachusetts, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement
on the banks of Virginia's James River. They were sponsored by the Virginia
Company of London, whose stockholders hoped to make a profit from the
resources of the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships
in its early years, but managed to endure, earning the distinction of
being America's first permanent English colony.

Plimoth Plantation is Plymouth as it was in the 17th
century: it is a centuries-old Wampanoag homesite, a welcoming bench
covered in furs, bluefish roasting slowly over an bed of hot coals,
and a man dressed in traditional deerskin clothing. It is townspeople
speaking the poetic language of Shakespeare's England, the sharp smell
of gunpowder during a military drill, the sound of laughter around
a glowing hearth and the salty breeze blowing across a wooden ship's
deck.

Founded by the German religious dissenters called the Society of Separatists
of Zoar in 1817 as a communal society, Zoar today is an island of Old-World
charm in east-central Ohio. Many of the German-style structures built
by the Zoarites have been restored and are open to the public as Zoar
Village State Memorial. Others are privately-owned, and serve as residences,
shops, restaurants and bed and breakfast inns.
