Bromfield’s Mansfield is the subject of an exhibit at the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library running April 14 through the end of May. In recognition of Mansfield’s 200th birthday and in commemoration of the Library’s 100th birthday, this presentation celebrates the life of the city’s literary heritage.
Louis Bromfield (1896-1956) grew up in Mansfield and returned here after finding fame in the worlds of literature, film, politics and agriculture. This exhibition explores his life and works to find out how his Mansfield roots influenced his writings and how people, places and events in our town show up in his novels and movies.
Also included in the exhibit are Malabar Farm-inspired artworks, created by local artists. these paintings are on loan from the Mansfield Art Center.
Louis Bromfield was 28 years old when he wrote The Green Bay Tree, a novel that takes place in Mansfield; the novel that launched his career. By the time of his death in 1956, the book had sold more than 700,000 copies around the world.
